Consumer Protection

PNG currently has only limited laws for consumer protection, which mainly concern product safety. The Commission has been taking a proactive approach, particularly in relation to consumer product safety and, increasingly, the recall of unsafe consumer products. The Review will assess the appropriateness of existing consumer protection laws and develop recommendations for reform.

The Review Team aims to identify the most common and most serious consumer protection issues in PNG; evaluate how well consumer interests are protected by existing laws (including the ICCC Act); examine the effectiveness of current enforcement measures for protection of consumers; and identify options for improvement of consumer protection in PNG.

Consumer protection issues are discussed in the Issues Paper: Consumer Protection and Economic Empowerment of Women in PNG, now available for download.
